For our new single origin hot chocolate variety, we use cacao from Sierra Leone, a country known for its rich, forest-friendly cocoa. Grown in the lush Eastern and Southern regions, including Kailahun, Kenema, and Kono districts, this cacao thrives under the shade of native trees in smallholder agroforestry farms. The tropical climate—hot, humid, and with distinct rainy and dry seasons—creates the perfect conditions for high-quality cocoa cultivation while preserving biodiversity and protecting wildlife habitats like the Gola Rainforest.
The farmers who cultivate this exceptional cacao primarily grow Trinitario and Forastero varieties. These beans are prized for their rich, earthy, and fruity flavour, with hints of nuts and spices. Some exhibit a mild acidity, balanced by a smooth cocoa finish. Careful fermentation and drying processes enhance their complexity, making them ideal for crafting indulgent chocolate drinks.
Beyond flavour, our cacao suppliers in Sierra Leone are leading a remarkable transformation. Through the adoption of Smallholder, a digital management system, they track each farm using GPS mapping, ensuring that the cocoa remains deforestation-free. Every farmer receives an ID card, allowing for transparent transactions and easy certification. Soon, real-time deforestation monitoring through Global Forest Watch Pro will further safeguard the forests and open new financial opportunities, such as carbon sequestration rewards.
Sustainability is at the heart of this cocoa. Supported by the Dutch Government and the European Union, our suppliers are promoting dynamic agroforestry in partnership with ECOTOP. This system interplants cacao with fruit and timber trees, improving soil fertility, increasing yields, and providing farmers with additional income sources. With 153 Farmer Field Schools in place, lead farmers receive hands-on training in these sustainable techniques and pass their knowledge on to others, helping to build resilient farming communities.
In addition to sustainability, ethical sourcing is a priority. Our suppliers have implemented a Child Protection Program in collaboration with ChildFund, establishing Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) that provide financial support to farming families. Many participants are women, strengthening financial independence, promoting gender equality and ensuring children stay in school rather than working on farms.
By choosing our hot chocolate, you’re not just indulging in a rich, flavour full drink—you’re supporting smallholder farmers, protecting forests, and promoting ethical and sustainable cocoa production. Each sip is a taste of Sierra Leone’s vibrant landscapes, hardworking communities, and commitment to a better future.
